Civilization and culture are two constellations that lie in the same continuum. Each influences and is in turn influenced by the other. Civilization is an advanced state of intellectual, cultural, and material development in human society, marked by progress in the arts and sciences, the extensive use of record-keeping, including writing, and the appearance of complex political and social institutions. This is basically a state of affair in a society at a particular time frame. The definition above suggests the advanced state of affair… in common parlance… but civilization may be traditional or not advanced.

People say Indus valley civilization or Egyptian civilizations which are primitive civilizations. On the other hand, culture means the ways of thinking, acting, behaving that people have internalized in them and which are transformed into reality through their actions in the society. For example, respecting the elders or treating guests as the God; as in “Atithi devo bhava” are examples of particular cultural traits. Here before proceeding any further one needs to understand the various constituents of the culture.

When one studies culture, two things can not be neglected; cultural traits and cultural complexes. Cultural traits are the individual acts that defy any scientific reason but are simply followed on the basis that they are rooted in tradition. The examples of cultural traits are folding hands in front of a deity or touching the feet of elders. The inter-related cultural traits form a cultural complex.

Over half a million protestors against the proposed immigration bill in California has again marked out the fact, how many new people are coming to America every year to realize ‘The Great American Dream’ and secondly it raises few questions about, how we will assimilate them in our society.

Culturally diverse societies are living in America with relative harmony toward each other. This harmony is not the result of assimilation of these diverse communities into the dominant culture but by progressive respects toward each other.

Education in Multi Cultural Society

Education has played major role in the emergence of United States as dominant power in World War II. Our education system focused on progressive values and liberalism, which led to the advancements in science and technology.

I have struggled all my life with books. Some of my colleagues were self proclaimed smart workers and some were modest enough to say that they are hardworking but dumb. In my case I tried both smart work and hard work but, unfortunately neither of the strategies worked. I guess success in college is a goal achieved by maintaining a balance.

Everyone cannot have a balance but definitely everyone wants to be successful in accomplishing their goals. Your goals while you are in an international college / University range from passing a certain number of courses to getting a degree, from eventually getting a job to getting a job that is best. Your goals may range from improving yourself personally, financially and intellectually to keeping your family happy. Whatever your goal is, the bottom line is that you want to make an impact on the college scenario by staying on top while you are away from your home country. The following suggestions cannot guarantee success in a study abroad program but they will improve the probability of success if followed

Be Organized.

To succeed at an American college / European University, a student must be organized. The college will have a counseling department with advisors who can help the student structure the best program. It is then up to the student to handle four or more courses at once, write and hand in term papers on time, and prepare for examinations.

The biggest mistake leadership makes is when culture is dismissed as the “touchy relationship stuff” and therefore doesn’t really matter. After all, leadership has largely focused on the economic equation to lead a business. There are times when focus is dominated by profits, sales, employee count, and efficiency. Economics almost always is the lagging indicator of what happened. Economics are important, but we have learned is harmful to employees and customers if organizational culture is not weighted equally. The one thing people don’t realize is economics is without morality. AIG could proxy for arrogance, greed and incompetence.

If you’re not convinced, define the purpose of your family only in economic terms. The spouse contributes x $; the kids contribute x $…don’t forget grandma. What does she contribute? Where did joy, happiness, making a difference, personal accountability fit?

Maybe your family is perfectly happy, joyful, feeling warm closeness and knows they are making a difference if you are only connected by money. I doubt it. People are not innate machines. Motivation is a sense of self worth and greater purpose. Otherwise, for what reason would we visit our parents or kids?

Peace Building Approaches

By · Comments (0)

Wikipedia (2010) defines conflict as actual or perceived opposition of needs, values and interests while describes a society or a relationship that is operating harmoniously and without violent conflict. Conflict is a lifetime symptom, as old as mankind -and it is easier to find than peace. It is a reality and manifests itself in numerous forms -which include: diagnosed conflict; psychological conflict -when the ego overruns the intellect and reality sense, when conflict is learned, or from differences in perception); shared conflict -in which a party in pain involves another or others; individual-situational conflict; socio-economic conflict -in relation to resources distribution and means to get them; socio-political conflict (positioning in the leadership hierarchy and its quality), socio-cultural conflict, or transformative conflict; and human-natural conflict -when one goes against the laws of nature, (or human-spiritual conflict).

It is notable, also, that conflict can be culturalized characterized by revenge and counter-revenge because of continued infliction on pain by another or as part of business and a craze for power and dominion over others that result into creation of social classes (less important people verses the most important characterized by negative discrimination) and social hierarchies.

Conflict also takes the context of different levels and understanding of civilization and their burning desire to spread and dominate one another. These, if not managed, potentially erase peace, deter human and ecological advancement and potentially threaten life of both humans and animals -right from the state of individual ill-health -who shares pain and suffering with a group of others to cause group ill-health, to cause breakdown of social fabric, breakdown of biological systems and eco-systems functioning -in totality, then demise or end to life.

Public Education & Homeschooling

By · Comments (0)

homeschooling
I saw a piece on CNN, a while back, which featured a family whose seven children had all been home-schooled: four of them were in or already out of college, and all four had started college when they were twelve years old!! These children were happy and well adjusted, and they gave God and their parents the credit for the life they had experienced. And yes, the father worked (in the home) while the mother taught and cared for the home and children. The father and mother both shared the responsibility for educating their children. This family’s whole life was built on the leading of God in schooling and raising their children.

Many people believe that home-schooled children have teachers or professors for parents, but this is rarely the case. Most teachers and professors are solidly against the idea of homeschooling, since it so often exposes the lacking in our educational system.

American public education, for the most part, has been anything but effective in the last half century, in particular! Public school students are nothing more than pawns and cogs in the machine of material science, popular culture and corporate Capitalism (”Good consumers,” as the education schools teach!). American students-today-aren’t taught to think, reason, problem solve and be creative, instead, they are indoctrinated into a secular belief system, which, through indoctrination and intimidation (political correctness), forces them to adopt current, societal values while, at the same time, discarding the values of their family’s! This isn’t really anything new, since our education system was born of an atheistic mother and corporate father at the time of the industrial revolution. Our education system, from its inception, was designed to raise up like-minded and more easily trainable workers for the corporations. This also gave the atheistic philosophers, of that day, a foothold, so they could pander their godless religion to the young and naive.

Developing a Global Culture

By · Comments (0)

culture
A culture of global citizenship is a vital aspect of developing a peaceful and prosperous human civilization. A diverse assortment of ancient and more recent civilizations are converging into one universal and divine civilization.

Our economy is already and increasingly globalized. The Internet is a global phenomena, national boundaries are almost irrelevant for the Internet. I heard a Peace Corp member telling a story about Kirghistan the other day, she said it is not unusual to see people talking on a cell phone while riding a horse or donkey.

The United Nations, Millennium Development Goals report, mentions that we are making progress getting insecticide treated mosquito nets, Aids drugs and cell phones to the people of Africa.

Educational Approach

By · Comments (0)

Educational practices are incredibly diverse not only around the world, but even within a given school. What some might view as the best approach to educating children, others might see as a mediocre attempt to do so.

The video “Pre-school in Three Different Cultures” illustrates this diversity in educational styles to the viewer. The documentary consists of the filming of three different pre-schools in different countries during the span of a normal day. The summaries of the day’s activities given in the video for each of the pre-schools let the viewer analyze both the social and academic aspects of the children’s experience throughout the day. The pre-schools included in the video are Komatsudani from Japan, Dong-feng from China, and St.Timothy from the U.S. (Hawaii). The following paper will shed light on what is known as constructivism and behaviorism, and describe which one of the schools falls under each category.

Constructivism is the theory that views children as little individual scientists. When following the theory of constructivism, students are allowed to explore their environment, interact with it, and learn from it. The constructivist teacher acts as a support pillar for students to lean on when they are in need, not the leader that everyone must follow. Constructivism also sees differences amongst the children and the things they learn from their interactions; not everyone learns the same things at the same rate or with the same ease.

After watching the video, the school that seems to have the most constructivist approach is St.Timothy. When it came time for the students to partake on an activity, the teacher gave them the opportunity to choose the activity they preferred instead of assigning them one or making the whole class do the same thing. This approach allows the students to participate on an activity that they find stimulating, which tends to let students learn much more than an activity that they find boring. It is also worth mentioning that when the students chose an activity by pointing at the representative objects the teacher would let the student know that she wanted them to indicate it by using spoken language. The teacher used a constructivist approach when doing this since she did not guide the student on how to form the sentence, but rather let them construct their own sentences and correcting them if necessary.
